CNC Machining for Semiconductors

Tiny Components, Big Innovation: The DATRON Advantage

DATRON machines support a wide range of critical applications in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Our high-speed milling systems provide the precision, efficiency, and surface finish quality required for the most demanding semiconductor components.

Key Supported Applications Include:

Polishing Pads

Machining molds for polyurethane polishing pads—used in wafer processing—requires intricate detailing and exceptionally smooth surface finishes. These molds, often made of aluminum and sometimes large in size, are perfectly suited for DATRON systems. With a rigid gantry-style construction and a spacious work envelope, DATRON machines handle large molds or multiple parts simultaneously. The high-speed spindles (up to 60,000 RPM) enable efficient micro-tool machining and deliver excellent results on fine details and surface quality.

Shower Heads for Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

Shower heads, used to distribute gases evenly in CVD processes, are typically manufactured from stainless steel or brass and require an array of precision-drilled micro holes. These components can have large diameters and demand extremely tight tolerances. DATRON machines are ideal for this application, featuring:

  • High-speed spindles up to 60,000 RPM for clean, efficient micro-drilling.
  • HSK collet options for minimal tool run-out and reduced breakage.
  • A rigid frame with low vibration for superior hole quality.
  • Large-format work areas capable of handling oversized parts or nested machining of multiple shower heads.

Semiconductor End Effectors

Handling brackets for wafer movement during production are often made from aluminum due to its lightweight, machinability, and strength-to-weight ratio. DATRON systems are optimized for aluminum machining and offer:

  • Micron-level precision.
  • High-speed spindles for fast, detailed machining.
  • Vacuum table and Z-Probe systems for consistent flatness—critical for precision brackets.
  • Ethanol-based coolant that evaporates cleanly, leaving no residue and avoiding part contamination.

Test Sockets for Semiconductor Devices

Test sockets are used for validating semiconductor function and are typically made from materials like PEEK, PEI, PPS, and glass-filled polymers. These components require:

  • Accurate drilling of dense micro-hole matrices with micron-level tolerances.
  • Fast, clean hole production enabled by DATRON’s high-speed spindles.
  • Capability to machine aluminum frames and mounting plates that hold the semiconductor in place during testing.
  • Reliable creation of tightly spaced holes in aluminum plates used for pogo pin insertion—key to test socket assembly.

Semiconductor Decapsulation (Delidding)

Decapsulation involves removing the top encapsulation layer of a semiconductor to expose internal components for failure analysis, reverse engineering, or quality control. Compared to acid etching or laser removal, mechanical machining offers greater control. DATRON machines make this process safe and efficient with:

  • A mechanical touch probe for precise surface mapping.
  • High-speed spindles and rigid construction for clean, controlled removal of hard epoxy layers—without damaging internal structures.

Semiconductor Rework

In cases where PCB assemblies are too costly to discard, rework is a cost-effective alternative. DATRON enables precision removal of components from PCBs by:

  • Providing tight depth control to remove components completely without damaging underlying copper traces.
  • Supporting accurate Z-offset setup using the touch probe.
  • Delivering micron-level tolerances ideal for delicate rework operations.
