Milling aluminum to produce parts like enclosures, housings and panels ... well, this is what we consider our "bread and butter". That's because our high-speed CNC milling machines were designed specifically for efficient machining of aluminum. Worldwide, DATRON machining centers are employed by leading electronics manufacturers for milling aluminum enclosures in both small and larger production runs. Single aluminum enclosures can be fixtured using our pneumatic clamping system while our integrated vacuum tables are often used for batch milling a number of aluminum enclosures from a single sheet of aluminum. In either case, users benefit from our high-speed machining spindle (up to 60,000 rpm) which produces superb quality parts in reduced cycle times. Many of our other integrated features and options have a positive impact on aluminum enclosure milling. They are as follows:


  • Probing / Surface Scanning - scans surface, recognizes irregular work-piece topography and compensates for it dynamically
  • Spray-Mist Coolant System - a micro-volume coolant that evaporates fast leaving clean parts and the need for degreasing
  • Automatic Tool Changer - up to 45 tool stations depending on machine model, includes tool-length and breakage detection
  • 5-Axis Capability - integrated trunnion-style rotary axis for multisided milling of aluminum enclosures (watch video)
  • CleanCut Chip Removal - vacuum technology developed specifically for sheet material machining
  • Automation - digital I/O allows for installation of 3rd party devices and full control through the machining program

Milling Machines for Aluminum Enclosures:
While all DATRON machining centers are designed for efficient milling of aluminum and are suited to machining enclosures, there are some differentiators that may help you to narrow your search. For example, if you are milling prototypes and small production runs, the 20" x 20" machining area on an M7 may be sufficient. The M7 can be equipped with clamping and vacuum workholding.

The M8Cube is an ideal machine for milling aluminum enclosures. With a 40” x 32” x 9” work area, the table has ample room for various workholding setups like pneumatic clamps, vacuum tables and even a trunnion-style 5-axis system. Precision-ground ball screws, linear guides and brushless direct drives provide superior accuracy in all axes. Optional XYZ probing recognizes irregular surfaces and compensate for them dynamically.

Now, if an extremely large work area is required, as is the case for milling large enclosures or batch milling a run of smaller ones, the MLCube is a large format milling machine that is ideally suited. The 60" x 40" travel of the MLCube can be equipped with a QuadraMate Vacuum Table to hold large sheet material up to 24" x 36". Aside from the large machining area, the specifications for the MLCube are similar to the M8Cube.
