Machining Extrusions and Aluminum Profiles

Milling Aluminum Extrusions? Many features on DATRON high speed CNC milling machines make them the best choice for machining extrusions and profiles. Start with the fact that aluminum extrusions are milled best with high speed spindles. Then there's our ample machining area (up to 1,020 mm x 2,500 mm) for long extrusions. We also have an optional cut-away table for vertical clamping of aluminum extrusions. Our ethanol mist coolant provides superior finishes and evaporates leaving clean aluminum extrusions with no degreasing required. With 3D probing milling extrusions that are curved or have rounded surfaces is no problem. And the list goes on.

Superior Extrusion Machining.
No material is more suited to high speed machining than aluminum. Our CNC machines are built from the ground up specifically for milling parts like aluminum extrusions. Automatic tool change allows for milling, drilling engraving and thread milling of extrusions with short cyle times. Options like pneumatic clamping and vacuum chucks or vacuum tables make set up of extrusions and profiles fast and easy. Navigate complex aluminum extrusions automatically with 3D probing which facilitates milling of extrusions with rounded or curved surfaces.

3D Probing & Surface Mapping for Milling & Engraving Extrusions with Rounded or Curved Surfaces:
Datron’s optional, but integrated Z-Correction Probe recognizes irregular work-piece topography and compensates for it dynamically. It does this by taking measurements along the surface of a part and feeding that data into the machining controller. The controller automatically adjusts for uneven surfaces or part position. Through this process, job setup times are reduced and extrusion engraving and milling is consistent. With the addition of the 3D Extension, the Z-Correction Probe locates extrusions and surface irregularities in the X, Y, and Z co-ordinates, finds centers of holes and bosses, pre-measures extrusions before they are machined, compensates for material variations, feeds data into ISO 9000 information chain for quality control, and even allows for the reverse engineering of many parts. The omni-axis Renishaw TP20 probe is ideal for complex part marking such as engraving a logo or serial number onto a rounded extrusion. Ordinarily, 3D programming would be necessary to accommodate surface depth changes and ensure an even depth engraving. With the TP20, the surface is scanned and irregularities or surface changes are automatically managed in the machining data without 3-D programming. The TP20 features a 6-way, kinematic, touch-trigger probe system to significantly improve part marking cycle times.
